Newsletter May 2015

May’s Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the Newport Diabetes UK Support Group.

Our launch sees us welcome Mr. Dai Williams, Director of Diabetes UK Cymru, Dr Kofi Oboubie, Consultant Physician and Susan Waters, Community Diabetes Nurse.

We have a provisional timetable for the year and when finalized and all t’s crossed and I’s dotted and speakers confirmed, we’ll publish it in the newsletter, on our facebook and twitter pages and our website, if you have any contacts that you would like to be included in the program please give the details to Sarah.

Next month (June 18th) we will be holding an Emergency General Meeting to appoint officers and committee members, in order to run a support group like this we need a structured committee, we will be looking to appoint a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer, if you are interested in standing for any of these positions please see Sarah as she has copies of role descriptions so you would know what is expected as an officer.

June 14th to June 20th is Diabetes Week and there are plenty of ways you can support Diabetes Week 2015.

1. Raise awareness

Help others seek support, advice and information by raising awareness of Diabetes Week. Order a supporter pack, full of posters and flyers for you to put up in your local community, at the Diabetes UK Online Shop

2. Join in

In the lead up to Diabetes Week think about how you manage your condition well and live life to the full. Then during the week join in the conversation by sharing your hints, tips and stories.

You could:

  • Post on our Facebook page
  • Tweet a comment or picture
  • Post a short video or photo on Instagram
  • Create a Pinterest board
  • Write a blog post
  • Add to our forum
  • Send us your story online

Find us on Facebook and Twitter and don’t forget to use our hashtag #DiabetesAndMe.

3. Raise funds

To kick off Diabetes week we are starting with a Big Collection Weekend at Tesco stores across the country.

I’m looking for volunteers who are willing to give 2 hours of their time on either Saturday 13th June or Sunday 14th June, Saturday’s collection times are 9am – 6pm and 10:30am – 5pm on Sunday. This will involve a bucket collection, will not involve selling anything and I’m hoping to have an information table too with lots of leaflets and booklets about living with Diabetes.

For more information and to sign up contact or Sarah on 07743447331 or at the group email
