Happy 1st Birthday

I can’t believe we’ve been up and running as a support group for a whole year. A huge and massive thank you from me to you for supporting our group.

What can I say about this month’s meeting, I’m really looking forward to this week’s meeting, a change of format and we’ll be having a buffet and a mingle rather than a structured meeting, it’ll be lovely to get to know you better and a thank you for supporting us and making the group the success it is.

Bronwyn and I have had a productive month helping out at a diabetes UK Know Your Risk roadshow at the Tesco Distribution Centre in Magor we did 78 risk assessments of workers assessing their risk of developing type 2 diabetes, we also hopped on the exercise bike to help with the Roadshow’s task of cycling the equivalent of Land’s End to John O’ Groats, we did try hula hooping with them but it’s best to say that our lack of co-ordination was a source of entertainment for the day!!

I’m taking part in the Speaker Training at Diabetes UK on Friday 20th, this is a chance for anyone who would like to attend to come and learn the best way to deliver the best information from Diabetes UK, if you would like to come along, you’d be welcome.

Next month we have Professor Peter Evans from Richmond House, RGH coming to talk to the group, he’s a lovely man with a great personality and I’m sure we’ll have a great night.

We will be looking to call an AGM in the near future, we will also need to think about fund raising and planning. An idea we could be looking at is maybe organizing a Christmas event with the other 2 diabetes groups in Newport, the Gwent Parents Dia-beating it, and the BAAM group, if anyone has any special talents at organizing events like this please let me know and if you would like to take a part on the committee in a fund raising role please keep your eye out for the AGM.

Diabetes Week is 12th - 18th June, there is a stakeholder event on Tuesday 14th at the National Assembly For Wales if you would like to attend please let me know and I can pass the details from Diabetes UK Cymru on to you.

During Diabetes Week the message this year is about “Setting the Record Straight” the truth about living with diabetes, dispelling the myths and misconceptions, it you would like to share your story there is a great article on the Diabetes UK website about diabetes week and getting involved, our June meeting is in the middle of Diabetes Week.

To raise awareness in the city about diabetes, I’ll be doing a day of presentations at the Office for National Statistics at Tredegar Park, a day of speaking to the people who work at the ONS and raising the profile of Diabetes, and what better opportunity then during diabetes week.
