June's Newsletter 2016

June’s Newsletter

A huge thank you for coming and sharing your recipes and buffet food with us, it was so nice to have a chance to chat and get to know you all a bit better.

This week 12th - 18th June is National Diabetes Week and this year the theme is “Setting the Record Straight”.

It’s time to set it straight about the myths and misconceptions of diabetes, it’s not catching, it’s not from eating too much sugar, it is a serious condition but instead of just living with diabetes you CAN live WELL with diabetes.

Diabetes UK are changing the way diabetes is seen by everyone, instead of diabetics we believe we are people living with diabetes because it’s important to put the person first.

So how can we get involved, this week I’m giving talks at the Newport Deafblind Group and the IPO (Patent Office) at their diabetes awareness day. Diabetes UK Cymru are also holding a Stakeholders Event at the Senedd on Tuesday, a chance to talk to our AM’s about what is important to us.

We, of course, are holding our June meeting with a talk from Professor Evans about diabetes in general, of course he will also be answering generic questions. It will be lovely to see you.

Diabetes UK Cymru are looking for a volunteer to head a team at the Tesco Spytty for the Diabetes UK and British Heart Foundation Big Weekend Collection on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th September. If you think you might be the one to head the team, please let Sarah know and she can put you in touch with Emily and Amie at the Diabetes UK Cymru Office.

We will be holding our group AGM following the July meeting on the 21st July, where we will be looking at electing a committee and putting forward a plan for the following year regarding fundraising so it would be very much appreciated if you would come along and have your say.

Do you have a flare for organizing functions? Along with the 2 other groups in Newport who have both set up in the last year, it would be nice if we arranged something between our groups and I was thinking a Christmas ball type of thing, with tickets we could sell to local businesses who might be persuaded to donate raffle prizes. Would anyone be interested in figure-heading this? Have a think and have your say at the AGM.

As ever, if there are any subjects you would like brought up at the group please let Sarah know, also any feedback, if there is anything we could be introducing or doing better please let us know.

Have a great month

Sarah J
