Hello and welcome to the Newport Diabetes UK Support Group.

This month sees us welcome Mrs. Dee Puckett from the ABUHB Living Well Living Longer program to talk about her program and how we can get involved. Ever thought of being a movie star! Dee has more details. We also welcome Amie Phillips from Diabetes UK to give a grounding of why a committee is advisable for the smooth running of the group and to officiate at the electing of officers for our inaugural committee

We started off Diabetes week this week with the Big Collection at Tesco Spytty on Saturday and Sunday, Sunday being a very quiet day as most of Newport closed down due the Velathon however we still managed to raise an amazing £372.46 for the official partnership of Diabetes UK, The British Heart Foundation and Tesco. Well done everyone who helped collect and to those who donated.

With everyone’s permission I would like to take some photographs at this week’s meeting to show how we, here in Newport, are supporting each other, which is the crux of what Diabetes Week is about this year.

I’ll be raising the groups profile at a community Saturday at Newport Central Library on Saturday 20th June with lots of leaflets and booklets as well as the library staff researching and providing useful books to help support and give advice regarding Diabetes.

August is the focus month from Diabetes UK for the Living With Diabetes Day’s, if you attended the day in Newport in November and would like to share your thoughts on the day if you could forward them to Sarah she will forward them to Shantelle Johnson the Events Marketing Executive for Diabetes UK.

At the last meeting Sara invited us to the Patients Reference Group in Torfaen, I went along and saw firsthand how what patients are saying is being heard, it’s something that should have a voice in Newport too, as such, and separate from this Group if you would be interested in forming a Newport Patients Reference Group, to be up and running by September-time please add your name to the book at the door.

Our next meeting will be Thursday 16th July where we hope to have the Events Timetable in print for the remainder of 2015, and taking suggestions for the program for 2016.

Finally:

Thank you for showing an interest in this group, we are here for you, please feel free to share your stories and make new friends.

If you have any queries, questions or comments please see Sarah.
