April’s Newsletter

Wow here we are a third of the way through 2016, I think this ride needs to slow down abit!!

Last month’s guest speakers from the Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service for Wales was really informative and well received. I’ve detailed them in the minutes if anyone would like to catch up on what was discussed, both Hayley and Nikky we both very approachable and it was nice to gain an understanding of what happens once the drops wear off and the photos are taken.

And so to this month, we are lucky enough to have Sue Waters and Jo Baker with us this month, who are part of the Community Cluster Diabetes Specialist Nurses who cover East and West Newport GP’s, they are coming to talk about the services available to us in the Newport Area and what to expect from the care we receive at the GP Surgery.

Last month, in the newsletter, I brought up the subject of the DPDG – Diabetes Planning and Delivery Group, their next meeting is on the 9th May at the Nantgarw Road Medical Centre in Caerphilly at 1:30pm and is open to anyone who lives with diabetes, cares for someone with diabetes or is a family member of someone with diabetes.

I have been trying to have the group featured in the South Wales Argus on the What’s On section so fingers crossed it should appeal regularly. I’ve also been to Richmond House over the last month and having spoken with Professor Evans he is keen to promote the group and is a strong believe and supporter of Support Groups like ours, in fact Professor Evans has kindly agreed to come along to talk at the group in June.

So that brings me on to next month’s meeting in May – It’s our first birthday, yes it’s really been a whole year we’ve been up and running, what a year, personally I’ve learnt lots about living with diabetes and hope that I’ve been able to share that with you all. So for our first birthday I thought it would be lovely to have a “Dinner Party” well more of a pot luck dinner party/buffet, with the request that everyone brings a dish of food that is special to them and their healthy diet, it would be lovely to share your stories of why these dishes are special to you and maybe share recipes with each other.

I have had the privilege, this week, of being the guest speaker at Penhow Women’s Institute, with a lovely warm welcome, it was a delight to share my story and the work that we, as a group do, as well as the work Diabetes UK does. I am attending volunteer speaker training in the next few weeks so if you have other groups that you attend and would like to pass my details on if they would be interested in having me speak at their group please ask them to contact me via the group email/website/Facebook page.

I have been contacted by a pharmacy manager with the thought of holding some coffee mornings, this is something I think is a brilliant idea and something we, as a group, could do. I’ll be looking for people who can support me arranging and running these mornings, they are still in the planning stage at the moment but definitely something that can only benefit the people of Newport living with diabetes.

Next months Birthday Meeting is Thursday 19th May 7pm – 8:30pm
